Queensland Police Service
About this submission
On 8 August 2024, the Inquiry wrote to the Queensland Police Service (QPS) and requested a written submission outlining:
- The historical and contemporaneous relevance of the Queensland Police Service’s functions and responsibilities to the matters described in paragraphs 5(a) to (d) of the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference;
- An overview of any position, policy, strategy, plan or actions that the Queensland Police Service currently has in place relevant to the matters described in paragraphs 5(a) to (d) of the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference;
- Any broad categories of historical documents or data that the Queensland Police Service holds relevant to the matters described in paragraphs 5(a) to (d) of the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference; and
- Any work, tasks, goals or actions allocated to the Queensland Police Service pursuant to findings or recommendations made by any previous inquiry or commission since 2010 that directly relates to the matters described in paragraphs 5(a) to (d) of the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference.
On 22 August 2024, the Queensland Police Service provided a 235 page submission which provided the information requested.
On 24 September 2024, the Commissioner of QPS appeared at a Government Session and provided oral submissions to the Inquiry.
On 30 September 2024, the Inquiry wrote to QPS and requested a submission that included the following:
- Any factual summaries or analyses compiled by the Queensland Police Service, as well as underlying, footnoted or otherwise referenced source material in relation to the history of the Native Mounted Police;
- The Terms of Reference of any review currently being undertaken by the Queensland Police Service in relation to the detention of children in watch-houses;
- Any ministerial briefing notes provided since 1 January 2021 by the Queensland Police Service to the Minister of Police concerning or relevant to the detention of children in watch-houses; and
- Since 1 January 2023, any records, data or statistics held or compiled by the Queensland Police Service about:
- the numbers of children detained in watch-houses;
- the numbers of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander children detained in watch-houses; and
- the duration of their detention.
On 17 October 2024, the Queensland Police Service provided a 235 page submission which provided the information requested.
